State consumers should be aware of a scam e-mail about a "stimulus payment" that claims to be from the Internal Revenue Service.
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal issued the warning Friday, saying the e-mail actually is an online identity theft scam seeking access to consumers' social security numbers and other personal information.
The e-mails look like messages from the IRS, and direct consumers to complete an attached "Stimulus Payment Form." The link, however, appears to lead consumers to the scammers' Web site.
Consumers who believe they were victimized by this or similar scams should report the incident to the Attorney General's office by calling (860) 808-5420.
