The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, (The 5th Of May), commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico, and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16th.
Altus, Oklahoma like the rest of the country, celebrated this holiday in grand style. New friendships were made, old friendships were renewed, families from all around the area were also reunited for this once a year event. Music, food, dancing and of course, games for the little ones took place. Everyone came out as a winner!
As with all events, it started out with just a spattering of folks but it didn't take long, for the City Park to become almost filled to overflowing with good cheer.
The first video will give you just a little idea of what took place. The second video shows the dance, Simon's Daughters, performed by the Lawton Hispanic Folkloric Dancers.
Also another event on the first weekend of May, was the Freedom Air Show, that took place on Altus AFB. Aircraft of almost every size and shape were in attendance and ready for inspection, by the community at large. The USAF Thunderbirds put on a very impressive air show. Check their schedule for a event taking place near you.
Not enough action taking place you might be saying? Well WOSC hosted the High School Rodeo that featured bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, barrel racing and goat tying just to name a few events.
This coming weekend will feature, The Rock And Rumble Car Show. If your a fan oldies music and fast old cars, then this event was meant just for you!
