The mainstay of almost every community across the land, is that of the church. Most often, small town America will have that mainstay located, right in the middle of town. Pictured above is that of the First Baptist Church located in the 300 block of North Main Street. Note: This is not the only church located within a 3 block radius of downtown Altus.
Panning to our left, you note just a small part of the First Baptist Church's parking lot. Not seen, is the parking lots located to the east of said church. But wait! What is that just coming into view to our left?
Over the years, questions abound as to what if anything, was going to happen to this small chunk of land, located to the north of the FBC. Rumors had it, another corner store, apartment complex, storage units, or additional parking for the First Baptist Church. Not very long ago, it was learned that a car wash was going to built within the 400 block! Yes ladies and gents, I said a car wash. As if, Altus doesn't already have enough, one is now going to be built, almost smack dab in the center of town?
Who in their right mind, would ever approve such a lame brained idea such as this? Well just to name a few, they are: Carole Atkinson, Linda Buxton, Winston Higgs and Sharron Preston. These were members of your Planning Commission. Let it be noted that no single member upon this board receives a single red cent for his/her services.
Questions are now being asked by members of our community, as to what if any, favors might have been received? That ladies and gents, this is the $64,000 question!
Who knows, you can attend your favorite church and cleanse not only your soul, but have your car washed too!
